Why become a volunteer

Becoming a Special Olympics Ottawa (SOO) volunteer is a great way to get involved and give back to your community. Our volunteers make a difference in the lives of Ottawa athletes with intellectual disabilities every day, through our programs, competitions and other activities. Volunteer with SOO today to gain experience, create memories and join a warm, supportive community.

Volunteer as a coach

Our sport programs run thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteer coaches. None of what we do would be possible without them! If you are interested in sharing your knowledge and love for sport with SOO athletes, come coach with us! We have various positions available from head coach to team manager, to assistant coaches, depending on the level of time commitment of interest to you.

Volunteer on council

Special Olympics Ottawa is governed by a volunteer-based managing and working council. Council manages program administration, finances, volunteer coordination and more for the Special Olympics community in Ottawa. Visit our meet the council page to find out more about your current council members as well as how you can get involved.

Volunteer at major competitions and sporting events

The sounds of fans cheering and music playing, the sight of athletes giving it their all and the smell of a fully stocked concessions stand...sound like your cup of tea? Whether you would like to help set up equipment, serve snacks, marshall athletes, we need your help!  Volunteer at one of our upcoming competitions or events. Note that COVID has put a hold on most in-person competitions, but we’d be happy to get you signed up for a volunteer so you’re ready to go when competitions start back up.
